DAY 28 : LOS ANTIGUOS / RIO PINTURAS AND HANDS CAVE / LAGO POSADAS
Description: a three-hour drive will take you to the entrance of the Pinturas River Canyon. Then you will walk for 2.5 km and reach Hands Cave, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. This is one of the main cave painting sites in Argentina. The cave was inhabited 10,000 years ago by groups of hunters who decorated their “home” throughout three different periods with guanaco and rhea hunting scenes, geometrical figures, hands in red, yellow, ocher, black and white. Art? Signs? Magical rites? We have little information about these people, ancestors of the Tehuelches, inhabitants of the region extending between Chubut River and the Strait of Magellan. This work of art was discovered in 1876 by the Argentine explorer Francisco Pascasio Moreno, after whom the park and the famous glacier were named.
